Possibilities of hospice support

“We want to accompany the families on their way.
We want to walk the path with those affected.
We want to endure their journey.”

For families and relatives, the diagnosis of a serious and incurable disease means that they often have to live for years with the knowledge that the sick child or young person will never grow up or that a parent will die.

We accompany and support affected families in which a child, an adolescent or a parent has a life-threatening or life-shortening illness, right from the time the diagnosis is made. We see ourselves as life companions, even over a longer period of time.

After death, we continue to be there for the families. We support children and young people in their grief in an age-appropriate manner.

Our work is carried out by a team of full-time and voluntary employees. In this way, in an absolutely exceptional situation, individual help can be offered in accordance with the needs of the family.

In action, we want to break down fears of contact in order to get society to deal openly with the topic of dying, death and grief, especially in the case of children and young people. We are also committed to ensuring that comprehensive palliative care is available to every dying person and their families.

Our goals

We create opportunities for the family to recharge their batteries.

We offer attentive support for children with life-limited illnesses.

We open up ways for siblings to be strengthened on their individual path.

We give parents the freedom to have time for themselves.

We promote sensitive and open communication in the family about illness, dying and death.

We support and advise on formalities.

Helping people to help themselves is important to us in order to empower families in their difficult situation.

Through our presence in the public we release forces for the further development of hospice work in our region.

Basics of our actions

The work of Sterneninsel is based on the principles of the German Hospice and Palliative Association and the guidelines it represents for good children's hospice work.

Our offers are free of charge for those affected. We are committed to secrecy and respect for privacy.

We attach particular importance to:

The offer of help at an early stage of the disease, preferably when the diagnosis is made

Affection and closeness in the accompaniment while respecting the living space of the family

A reliable and relieving companion, even over a longer period of time

Age-appropriate and individual support for children and young people

careful attention to the siblings of sick children

appreciative and relieving encounters in the family

social participation of children, adolescents and young adults who are life-threatening or life-limiting ill.

Cooperation with other network partners. We provide families with needs-based contacts and information.

An attitude that encourages families to see farewell processes, dying, death and grief as part of life.

Age-appropriate support for children in grieving processes.

Gradual withdrawal from families when the situation allows.

Well-trained full-time and volunteers in action. We continue to educate ourselves.

Prerequisites for accompaniment

Relatives or friends of the affected family, as well as clinics or social institutions that are related to the family, call us again and again. You would like to clarify questions about a possible accompaniment. We very much welcome this networking! It helps many a family to break down existing inhibitions and actually get support from the Sterneninsel to accept

However, in order to be able to accompany a child or young person in a hospice, we always need an order from the legal guardian.

Other offers

Our hospice support is as diverse as the families we support. With our support, we want to get involved with the individual family as much as possible. The children or young people learn that they are preparing for the time with “their” Sterneninselcompanion can be happy and that YOU are the center of attention: Whether it's a trip to the nearby wildlife park, playing together, baking cookies in the Sterneninselkitchen or with creative work and many other possibilities. We are open to any questions you may have about your brother's or sister's, father's or mother's illness. We take the time for the sick children or young people and work to ensure that they can participate in life as much as possible. A visit to a cocktail bar has already been organized for an e-wheelchair driver, or a child and his or her wheelchair have been carried over stairs and thresholds in order to take part in an exciting event.

In a long-term relationship, a great deal of trust often grows between a family and us Sterneninselemployees. This gives mutual courage to enter into difficult and in-depth discussions about the progression of an illness and ultimately not to avoid questions about dying and death.

In any case, the family decides for themselves how far and in what form they want to get involved with our offers.

facts and figures

In 2021 we were allowed to work in the hospice area of the Sterneninsel Accompany 22 families in which one child had a life-limiting illness and 7 families with a seriously ill parent. We accompanied 1 family with a sick child and 3 families with one parent intensively until death. We were able to say goodbye to 3 because the condition had improved. We continue to provide support to 26 families.
